Weird characters are shown instead of the expected text

Description
When playing a game in languages as Japanese, Ancient Greek, Russian, Arabic or even Latvian the sentences displayed in the game are shown using symbols with no meaning at all.
Often the reason for this incorrect behavior can be traced to the version of Java the browser is using. If you have changed language from the game, the java virtual machine may be an old version, since languages as English or Danish doesn't require the newest Java plugin the plugin used in those languages are usually an older version.
Solution
Start the game from the link under the correct language (e.g. World of VISL -> Russian -> Games -> Syntris).

In order to continue using the Java applets, see troubleshooting tips and Download Java.
On Windows use Internet Explorer 11. macOS no longer supports Java applets.
The Chrome extension CheerpJ Applet Runner may work for some use-cases.
